Pick the right one
A rotary cutter cuts standing growth off, tall grass, weeds, briars and light brush. Fast, economical, ideal for maintenance and for ground that just needs knocking down.
It doesn't grind material to chip and it won't take on heavy stems or trees.
A mulching head grinds heavier material (cedar, saplings and small trees) down to mulch left on the ground. Slower per acre, more capable, more expensive.

If it's heavier than it looks
Plenty of pasture that looks like a brush hogging job turns out to have cedar and saplings hidden in it. We'll tell you at the estimate rather than turning up, finding we can't cut it, and re-quoting halfway through.
On mixed ground we often do both: mulch the heavy pockets, brush hog the rest. That's usually the cheapest way to get the whole field back.
